A location you can bring back
Sony is showing XYN spatial capture at IBC 2026 as part of its virtual production lineup. The idea is to turn a real space into a digital asset that can be used as a studio background. Its September 9 announcement places that workflow alongside the company’s broader production tools.
The most revealing detail is the phone mounted above the camera. In Sony’s XYN product documentation, Spatial Scan Navi uses augmented-reality guidance to show capture positions and angles for a connected mirrorless camera.
Capture, process, display
The next stage is Spatial Scan, a cloud application that converts photographs of spaces and objects into 3D assets. A separate Spatial Renderer Plugin handles playback of those assets for production. Sony describes professional virtual production as a target use.
This involves compatible capture hardware and cloud processing; it is not an instant phone-only room filter. Sony notes that cloud congestion can affect generation. The product documentation is at https://xyn.sony.net/en/products/xyn_spatial_capture_solution.
What a useful trial would measure
For a production team evaluating the idea, our suggested test is a small location with a known intended camera move. Check the capture effort, processing turnaround and the result from that specific viewpoint. A beautiful still is only one part of the decision: the asset must work for the shot the team needs.
That puts the value in the repeatable workflow: gathering a location deliberately, then checking whether the digital version serves the production.
