Long reach, a different carrying problem

Sony announced a 400mm F4.5 and a 600mm F6.3 G Master lens on September 15. The listed weights are approximately 994g and 995g respectively, excluding the tripod mount. The corrected announcement lists October availability.

For wildlife and sports photographers, that is an interesting carrying proposition: a fixed long focal length without the same bag-weight assumptions many people associate with super-telephoto gear.

Compare the whole setup

The lens is only part of what you carry. Add the camera, support equipment and any other lens before comparing a hiking or travel kit. A lighter lens may change which setup you are willing to bring, which can matter more than a specification you leave at home.

These are fixed-focal-length lenses. A zoom trades a different combination of framing flexibility, weight and aperture. Decide whether your subject distance changes too quickly to comfortably work with one focal length.

Weight is not the only tradeoff

An F6.3 lens and an F4 lens do not gather the same amount of light at their widest apertures. Compare shutter speed and subject movement in the conditions you actually photograph, especially early or late in the day.

Sony’s US announcement lists $2,699.99 for the 400mm and $3,699.99 for the 600mm. Those are announced prices, not a recommendation to buy without checking compatibility and independent image-quality testing.
