A glance at the back
Putting a phone face down usually removes the screen from the conversation. Google’s HiLight gives the back of its Pixel 11 Pro phones a limited vocabulary of colors and patterns, so selected information remains visible without turning the display over.
Google describes custom colors for incoming calls from chosen people. It also uses different light patterns to indicate when Gemini is listening, thinking or responding. The feature was announced in August for Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold.
Give each color a job
Our suggested starting point is deliberately small: choose the people whose calls you would interrupt a meeting or dinner to take, then assign colors you can remember. The goal is to recognize the caller quickly. A large palette that requires a mental lookup table defeats that purpose.
Try the arrangement in the place you would actually leave the phone. Ask whether the cue is useful at a glance and whether it helps you make a decision without picking the device up. These are evaluation suggestions, not results from a hands-on test.
A different kind of interface
The appealing idea is that an interface can communicate less and still do a useful job. For our money, caller recognition is a clearer use case than adding decoration to every idle moment. The measure of success would be fewer unnecessary pickups while the calls you care about still get through.
