Apple’s first foldable iPhone is built around a visible change in scale. Closed, iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display. Open it and the inner display expands to 7.6 inches.
That makes the core proposition easier to understand than a processor chart: a compact view for a quick task, then a wider canvas when you want to read, look closely or do more at once.
The outside screen does more
Duo Preview lets people being photographed see their framing. The outer screen can also act as a viewfinder for selfies using the rear cameras. Those are useful consequences of having a screen on both sides of the experience.
Apple lists the A20 Pro chip, side-button Touch ID and a nano-texture interior finish. Apple Pencil USB-C support is promised later this year.
This one arrives in October
The US starting price is $1,999. Preorders begin October 16, with availability October 23—not alongside the September 18 arrivals.
The design is worth looking at in motion and in the hand. With a folding device, opening it is part of the interaction, not just a way to reveal a specification.
