The headline camera change in iPhone 18 Pro is something you can picture: six tiny blades changing the opening through which light enters. Apple has added a variable aperture to its 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera.
The phone can adjust it automatically, or you can choose among four manual aperture settings. That puts another creative decision beside the familiar choice of where to point the camera.
What aperture changes
An aperture affects how much light reaches a camera’s sensor and contributes to depth of field—the range of distances that appears acceptably sharp. In practical terms, photographers balance subject separation against keeping more of a scene in focus.
Apple’s Pro controls also provide aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram. The interesting part is having those decisions together, rather than needing a different tool for each adjustment.
The launch details
The phones use Apple’s A20 Pro chip, manufactured on a 2-nanometer process. Preorders open September 12, with availability beginning September 18.
The launch photography shows the new lineup; independent camera comparisons will be more useful than color choices for judging how much the aperture changes everyday pictures.
