A lighter phone, piece by piece

Samsung puts the Galaxy Z Fold8 at 201 grams, down from 253 grams for the Fold5. That is a 52-gram reduction—about one-fifth of the older phone’s weight. Its September engineering account describes a whole-device redesign, rather than one miraculous material.

The team revisited roughly 270 components and more than 180 types of smaller parts. Changes included thinner display support structures, revised circuit layouts and consolidated pieces. Some individual savings were just 0.001 grams.

Do not mix up the two models

The 201-gram figure belongs to Fold8. Samsung separately lists Fold8 Ultra at 215 grams, matching Fold7 while increasing battery capacity from 4,400 to 5,000 mAh. The larger battery added roughly six grams, which engineers offset elsewhere.

For anyone comparing foldables, the useful question is what the weight budget buys: easier carrying, more battery, or another capability. Look at the exact model’s weight and battery together, then include the case you actually plan to use. Samsung’s engineering figures explain the design choices; they are not a battery-life test.
