The most useful smartwatch upgrade may be the one that keeps it off the charger. Apple says Watch Ultra 4 reaches up to 50 hours of everyday use, or 84 hours in Low Power Mode.

Those are Apple’s testing figures, but the appeal is easy to understand: more room for a workout, a night of sleep tracking and the next morning before finding a cable.

Why the routine matters

A watch is useful when it is on your wrist. Charging during a workout or overnight means choosing which stretch of your day goes unrecorded. A longer interval gives you more flexibility to choose the downtime.

Low-power runtime is a separate figure, so it is worth deciding which features you expect to keep active before planning a long trip around it.

What else is new

Ultra 4 includes the S11 chip and a new Health Sensing System. It comes in natural or black titanium, starts at $799 in the US and reaches stores September 18.

For someone already happy with a smartwatch, the practical question is simple: does your current charging routine get in the way? The extra breathing room is the clearest reason to look closer.
