Learn from the run itself
IBM Research describes ALTK-Evolve, an approach that derives reusable guidelines from an agent’s own task trajectories. Instead of asking people to label every demonstration, the system extracts instructions from previous attempts and applies them in later runs. The announcement reports improvements on two evaluated domains, with the stock model and agent matching or outperforming fine-tuned retail baselines in those settings.
A different path to improvement
Many agent systems improve through more demonstrations, fine-tuning or carefully written prompts. ALTK-Evolve explores a lighter loop: attempt a task, inspect the trajectory, distill useful guidance and try again. If it works reliably, this could help developers refine agents when labeled examples are scarce or expensive.
Keep the scope precise
The results described are tied to the two evaluated domains and the authors’ setup. They do not show that an agent can safely learn from arbitrary mistakes or improve on every task. As with other self-improvement methods, quality depends on whether the extracted guidance captures a real lesson rather than reinforcing a bad attempt.
