A review at absurd scale

GitHub says it rebuilt the pull request view in the GitHub Copilot app and tested it with an open-source change containing 2,200 files, more than a million changed lines and over 400 inline review comments. The reported result is a view that opens and scrolls like an ordinary pull request, with complete comment threads rather than clipped boxes.

This is not a claim that teams should routinely merge million-line changes. Smaller, stacked pull requests are usually easier to review. But some migrations and sweeping refactors cannot be split cleanly, and AI coding agents make it increasingly plausible that reviewers will confront unusually large diffs. The tool must remain usable when that happens.

What actually changed

Rendering every changed line in the browser would overwhelm it, so the interface virtualizes the diff. GitHub says only roughly 100 code rows are mounted at once even when the document represents a million lines. Comments complicate that trick because their height changes with markdown, images, replies and expanding sections.

The engineering team redesigned how it measures and positions comments, and how the data pipeline feeds the visible region. It also built an unattended measurement loop that detected blank gaps and missing threads across deep scroll positions. The goal was not only speed in one screenshot, but stable behavior as a reviewer moves through a complex conversation.

Why it matters beyond one PR

A code review is not a static document. Comments arrive, threads open, sections collapse and the reviewer returns to a place later. GitHub says its new surface preserves the reading position and adjusts surrounding code as comments change size, making the experience less fragile under load.

For teams adopting coding agents, review remains the handoff between generated changes and trusted software. Faster code production has little value if humans cannot inspect the result. This update is a concrete example of infrastructure adapting to the volume that agent-assisted development can create.
