Stop pasting the same prompt into every new chat

Gemini Skills are reusable instruction sets Google says can automate recurring work. Users invoke one by typing a slash and its name, turning a saved prompt into a small repeatable tool.

Google’s examples include presentation preparation, matching a writing style and asking for several perspectives. Skills are rolling out globally in Gemini chat. Google says existing Gems will migrate automatically as the older customization feature is retired. Source: https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/gemini/automate-tasks-with-skills/

Skills can be combined and grounded in files

Google says users can stack Skills—for example, combining presentation preparation with brand guidelines. The rollout also supports reference files such as plain text, PDFs and images.

Users can create a Skill from a chat and reuse it with a slash command or matching request. The practical promise is less repeated setup: save the instructions once, attach relevant material and invoke the workflow when needed.

The migration happens in stages

Google says Skills are rolling out in Gemini chat, with Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit and education access due in the coming weeks. Personal Gems are scheduled to go away in November, with later dates for Workspace customers.

Google Labs Gems will not migrate. Users should check which feature they built and whether its data carries forward. A saved instruction can make work repeatable, but output quality still depends on the model, context and source files.
