A pull request too large for a normal review screen

GitHub says it rebuilt how the Copilot app renders very large pull requests after finding an example with 2,200 files, more than one million changed lines and over 400 inline comments. The company describes it as the largest pull request it could find in its open-source data.

At that scale, a code review interface has to handle more than large text. It must keep scrolling responsive, place comments beside the right lines and let readers jump between files without freezing or losing their place.

The fix is in the interface

GitHub’s engineering work combines virtualization for known diff rows with dynamic geometry for inline comments. Virtualization means the app can avoid drawing every row at once; comment layout then has to account for the changing height and position of review discussions.

The accompanying clip shows the Copilot app navigating the enormous diff. The result is a software interface that remains usable with a very large review, not evidence that Copilot automatically understands or approves all of the changes.

Why this matters to coding agents

AI coding tools can generate large changes, but reviewing those changes still depends on the tools developers use to inspect them. If a review screen slows down or loses the relationship between a comment and a line, a technically valid diff becomes much harder to assess.

Improving the UI’s ability to display a huge pull request is infrastructure for that review process. It helps people navigate the work and comments; reviewers still need to decide whether the code is correct, safe and maintainable.

A useful benchmark for developer tools

The example gives a concrete stress test for code review software: can it render a million-plus lines and hundreds of comments without becoming unusable? It also shows how apparently mundane user-interface work can become a bottleneck as AI makes it easier to produce larger changes.

GitHub’s demo is a scale result about rendering performance. It does not tell us how often teams will review pull requests of this size, or whether the app improves review accuracy. But it sets a visible ceiling that other code review tools can now compare against.
